Law Enforcement Liaison
Key Responsibilities:
Crisis Intervention:
- Respond to and assist law enforcement officers with calls involving individuals experiencing mental health crises.
- Provide on-scene support, de-escalate situations, and assess the mental and emotional state of individuals.
- Assist in determining the appropriate course of action, including involuntary commitment, referral to mental health services, or other interventions.
Case Management:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of individuals' mental health needs and develop individualized care plans.
- Coordinate with mental health providers, social services, and other relevant agencies to facilitate access to necessary resources and treatment.
- Follow up with individuals, their families, and service providers to monitor progress and adjust care plans as needed.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all interactions and interventions.
Training and Education:
- Provide training to law enforcement officers on recognizing and responding to mental health crises, de-escalation techniques, and available community resources.
- Stay current on best practices, legal requirements, and emerging trends in mental health care and crisis intervention.
- Share relevant information and resources with law enforcement personnel, community organizations, and the public to improve awareness and understanding of mental health issues.
Community Outreach and Collaboration:
- Build and maintain relationships with local mental health providers, hospitals, social service agencies, and other community partners.
- Participate in community events, meetings, and outreach activities to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma.
- Represent the Sheriff's Office on local mental health advisory boards, coalitions, and task forces.
Program Development and Evaluation:
- Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures related to mental health crisis intervention and care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of mental health programs and interventions, identifying areas for improvement and recommending changes.
- Prepare reports on mental health interventions, outcomes, and trends for review by department leadership.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field required; (Master’s degree preferred).
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in mental health care, crisis intervention, or a related field.
Valid Iowa driver’s license with a good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of mental health disorders, crisis intervention strategies, and available community resources.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals and groups.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement officers, mental health professionals, and community partners.
- Capacity to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Commitment to ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality.
